Brent Youth Parliament session November 2009Councillors are elected by the people of their borough and – if you’re 18 or over – you can vote in local elections to decide which of the candidates will become part of the council.

Candidates for council can be independent or they can be a member of a political party – either way, once in power, they must serve the needs of their entire local community.

The council guides the work of the local authority, who aim to improve the lives of everyone living the area. They do this by spending money on making public services better and developing the areas and facilities we all share.

Members of the council are the amplifier you need to make your community voice heard. If there’s something that you’d like to change or a local issue that you think needs dealing with, then contact your councillor.
